Perrotto: What Would It Take for Pirates to Land Outfielder?
The Pittsburgh Pirates are presumably buyers with the MLB trade deadline coming up Tuesday. The Pirates are just two games out of the third and final National League wild-card berth despite a lackluster 53-52 record. In what was as close to a must-win game as can be in July, the Pirates edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 in 10 innings on Sunday in Phoenix.
Pirates Power Rankings: Slow and Steady to the Deadline?
The Pirates held their position in the developing National League Wild Card race this week, taking a series against their division rival St. Louis Cardinals before losing two of three against the Diamondbacks. Both series posed crucial for Pittsburgh, as both St. Louis and Arizona sit immediately ahead of them in the standings. As has been the case all year, though, the Buccos didn’t deviate one way or another in the quagmire of a playoff field, playing to a .500 record on the week.
Leal Making a Push and More From Steelers Training Camp
While areas like wide receiver and defensive back have received a fair amount of attention as “areas of need,” one could easily argue the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive line isn’t far behind. With three guys 30 years of age or older (Cam Heyward, Larry Ogunjobi and Dean Lowry), there is some cause for concern. Some of that concern could be alleviated by the play of DeMarvin Leal.
Rockies make another move, trade Jalen Beeks for Pirates' left-handed prospect
The Rockies made their second move ahead of the MLB trade deadline, shipping relief pitcher Jalen Beeks to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for pitching prospect Luis Peralta. MLB.com reported the move late Monday. The 31-year-old Beeks appeared in 45 games this season for the Rockies, throwing 49 ⅓ innings...

George Pickens Not Worried About Being Double-Teamed: ‘Gonna Be The Same Treatment’
With the Pittsburgh Steelers trading WR Diontae Johnson and not adding another similar-caliber receiver this offseason, WR George Pickens is going to face more attention from opposing defenses. But the increase in attention isn’t a concern for Pickens. “When Diontae was here, we were both being double-teamed. So it’s...

Pirates Option Jack Suwinski to Triple-A, Activate Bryan Reynolds; Bailey Falter Returns From IL
The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned outfielder Jack Suwinski to Triple-A Indianapolis. It clears a roster spot for outfielder Bryan Reynolds, who has been activated from the Bereavement List. The 2024 season has been a major disappointment for Suwinski, who turns 26 years old on Monday. In 88 games on the season, Suwinski carried a dreadful .188/.264/.324 batting line with only 17 extra-base hits including nine home runs. In Sunday’s comeback win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Suwinski went 0 for 2 and struck out in both of his plate appearances before he was pinch hit for late in the game. Over his last...

George Pickens Proud Of Calvin Austin III, Happy To Be ‘Leading The Room Together’
All offseason, rumors have flown around about the Pittsburgh Steelers potentially trading for a wide receiver. Since they jettisoned Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, the Steelers have had a massive hole at receiver. George Pickens should be the No. 1 guy, but it’s uncertain how the depth chart will shake out beyond that. The Steelers signed multiple veteran players to compete for the No. 2 spot, but perhaps another homegrown player will seize the opportunity. According to Pickens, Calvin Austin III is a name fans should keep an eye on.

Pittsburgh Penguins Defenceman’s Contract Represents a Crossroads for Future
As the Pittsburgh Penguins navigate an uncertain future, the contract status of Marcus Pettersson is a pivotal topic for the organization. It seems the player and the team are at a crossroads. With Pettersson’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, the Penguins must decide whether to re-sign or trade him. Whichever decision is made, will likely mirror the broader strategy of either trying to contend or sparking a rebuild. Pettersson’s Value to the Penguins Marcus Pettersson has been a consistent presence on the Penguins blue line since 2018. Pettersson was acquired from the Anaheim Ducks. In exchange, the...
Decisions Wait for Crosby; Latest on Marcus Pettersson
Last March, the Pittsburgh Penguins cast aside sentiment and locker room wishes when president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas dealt Jake Guentzel for four assets, including winger Michael Bunting. Guentzel was 29, and his contract was expiring, which is nearly the same situation facing defenseman Marcus Pettersson. In this case, PHN has learned the Penguins have discussed a new contract, or at least broached the subject of a new deal, with Pettersson, but further talks are on hold until the most significant issue is resolved. Until after Sidney Crosby signs. The Crosby negotiations are probably the biggest negotiations surrounding the Penguins since Mario...
