KILGORE, Texas (KETK) – A fatal crash on I-20 near Kilgore resulted in one death, several injuries and four dead cattle on Sunday.

According to Kilgore PD, the crash happened when a small westbound SUV was launched across the median at around 93 miles per hour and hit a truck towing a livestock trailer heading eastbound in midair.

The Kilgore Police Department revealed that the driver of the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and remains in critical condition, the front passenger did not survive the crash and there were two additional adult passengers whose conditions were serious.

Kilgore PD also said that the truck and trailer were occupied by four passengers and four heads of cattle. All four of the occupants of the truck were taken to a hospital, including one child that had to be airlifted, officials said.

The eastbound family was reportedly heading home to Florida from showing their Brangus cattle at the Waco Junior Livestock Show when the crash happened. Kilgore PD said that the livestock that survived the crash were injured severely and had to be “dispatched.”

“A special thanks to the civilians who self dispatched to help take care of the livestock and the family’s possessions that had been strewn throughout the crash site. I believe some of them were somehow connected to the Junior Livestock Show, but several trucks and livestock trailers were showing up before we knew it. They were a massive help to the Florida family. Some of them even went to the hospital. Our Chaplains went to be with those at CHRISTUS and helped them acquire accommodations while they were here. A KPD Chaplin is in Tyler today to assist the family from Louisiana. This is what makes East Texas great! Texans being Texans,” Kilgore Police Department said.

Kilgore PD also thanked Kilgore Fire Department, Kilgore Rescue, CHRISTUS EMS, the KPD Chaplin, Texas DPS, Gregg County, Sabine Fire Department, TxDOT, Wallace Wrecker, their single dispatcher and Sgt. Tim Dukes who gave his own truck to the father of the child flown to Dallas so he could be by their side.
