On May 22, Kill Devil Hills commissioners honored town manager Debbie Diaz for 40 years of service to the town.

She was hired by the town in May of 1984. Nine years later she was promoted to town manager; a position she has held for the last 31 years.

Mayor John Windley thanked Diaz for her leadership, her friendship, and for being a good listener.

Former town mayors spoke during the meeting about the influence Diaz has had on their roles.

“I want to thank you for being an incredible mentor,” said Sheila Davies. “Maybe unbeknownst to you, but your advice and insights have been instrumental in my personal and career growth. I am truly grateful for the time and effort you’ve invested in me. Your guidance has been a guiding light in my life.”

Ben Sproul said, “When I look at [other leaders] I can’t think of anybody who has done a better job, who is stronger at holding an organization together and really inspiring that kind of family atmosphere that we have here. [An atmosphere] where people feel like they can trust each other and that they have a shared vision that they’re all moving in the same direction for goals that are good for everybody.”

The town presented Diaz, who is an animal lover, with a photo prop that will be installed at the town’s dog park.
