KILLINGLY, Conn. (WPRI) — A Smithfield woman was arrested in Killingly, Conn., after police say she caused a crash on the highway while driving the wrong way.

Around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Connecticut State Police were called to a two car crash on I-395, near exit 38, just over the Rhode Island border.

When troopers arrived on scene, they found a Toyota Camry stopped on the shoulder of the highway and a Ford Escape stopped in the left lane. Both of the vehicles were damaged.

The driver of the Ford said she called 911 after the driver of the Toyota abruptly pulled a U-turn while in the shoulder of the road, causing a collision.

While speaking with the driver of the Toyota, identified as 34-year-old Meghan Wolfsberger, of Smithfield, they smelled alcohol and saw other signs of possible impairment.

Wolfsberger told troopers she had been drinking alcohol before she began driving. Authorities also found empty bottles of alcohol on the driver’s side floor.

Wolfsberger failed the sobriety tests and was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, and operating a motor vehicle with suspended registration.

She was released on a $500 bond and expected to be arraigned in Danielson Superior Court in August.
