This unique doughnut shop will replace the former Mom & Pop's Bakery | The Buzz

KIMBERLY - The former Mom & Pop's Bakery building will be the new location for Cheeky Doughnuts, a locally-owned doughnut shop that started in the home of owner Kim Thiel.

A May 31 announcement attributed the closure of Mom & Pop's Bakery to the owner's retirement. It's last day was June 23.

This month, Cheeky Doughnuts announced that it will be taking over the former bakery at 710 W. Kimberly Ave.

Thiel said visiting Cheeky Doughnuts won't be the same experience as visiting a typical bakery or doughnut shop.

"We only fry our doughnuts when you place your order," Thiel said. "It's about a 24-hour process to make the dough, so everything is very intentional and thoughtful."

All of the doughnuts are made from the same dough with varying flavors and toppings. The doughnut shop will have three flavors continually on the menu and one or two rotating flavors every month. The three permanent flavors are cinnamon sugar, pistachio cardamom and brown butter maple glaze.

"I want to only use nuts, herbs, spices, fruits and a more natural, artisan palette for these doughnuts," Thiel said. "They are not going to be covered in chocolate chips or cereal or gobs of frosting, these will be more of a delicacy."

Thiel has been selling doughnuts to customers from her home since 2020. She spent her time during the coronavirus pandemic learning and perfecting, what she calls, "the perfect doughnut recipe".

"We started, what we called, Curbside Doughnuts," Thiel said. "My kids and I would play in the kitchen and come up with all these flavors. They would run out to cars with their masks and take people's orders then bring them back to me to fulfill."

Thiel said once lockdown ended, Curbside Doughnuts took a backseat in her life, until her daughters proposed the idea to start it back up.

"We started Curbside Doughnuts again last spring and started doing pop-ups as well," Thiel said.

But Thiel was operating from her home under Wisconsin's Cottage Food Law, which, at the time, allowed fried foods to be sold from home. In December, that decision was challenged, and she could no longer sell doughnuts.

When Mom and Pop's bakery became available, Thiel wasted no time acquiring the building so she could continue her passion of making doughnuts with her daughters.

Thiel said the menu will be short and minimal so customers will have the chance to try all of the flavors. Some beverages will also be available for purchase.

"I do have plans to partner with a local coffee roaster and serve great coffee," Thiel said. "There might be some hot cocoa or seasonal drinks, but doughnuts are our specialty so for now it'll just be coffee, water and milk."

Cheeky Doughnuts is expected to open this fall.

"Your chances of having experienced something like this before are slim," Thiel said. "I don't know of any Wisconsin bakeries that are making doughnuts to order and serving them warm and fresh."
