SEATTLE – The personal use of fireworks in Seattle and King County is illegal. Even though they are banned, each year fireworks cause fires and injure people in the City and surrounding areas. In 2023, the Seattle Fire Department responded to 58 fireworks-related incidents. Just four years ago in 2020, a significant fire occurred in West Seattle where fireworks ignited dry brush in front of a four-story apartment building and quickly extended to the top floor balcony. Fortunately, no one was injured but several residents were displaced and the total estimated loss was $100,000.

ANNIVERSARY: South Park Bridge opened 10 years ago today
King County Road Services reminds us that today is the 10th anniversary of a momentous day in local transportation history – the opening of the rebuilt South Park Bridge. Our photo above is from the grand-opening party, held on Sunday, June 29, 2014, a day before the full opening to traffic. The bridge opened exactly four years after its predecessor was closed for safety concerns; when its closure was announced, there was no guarantee a new one would be built, as funding hadn’t been finalized, and community tumult resulted. But a few months later, full funding was announced, and construction started half a year after that. Final cost of the bridge, which is a King County structure, was $175 million.

Valuations of King County office properties poised for steep drop
The King County Assessor's Office on Monday said it anticipates valuations of most residential areas will increase 10% on average for tax year 2025, while valuations of Seattle office properties could fall by up to 40%.<\p> Each year, county assessors set values on every residential and commercial property, and these values are applied to the next year's tax bill. Leon Richardson has been appointed the new director of King County’s Department of Local Services. He was previously at the County Department of Community and Human Services, where his achievements include helping stand up vital assessment and recovery centers at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a matter of weeks, he built out King County’s vaccination infrastructure, ensuring equitable access and distribution. Additionally, he administered a $400 million eviction and rent assistance program as well as overseeing the renewal of the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy.
