Grow North Farm Raises Urban Produce for Immigrant Entrepreneurs
Mountain View’s Grow North Farm provides space for immigrants to learn what grows well in Alaska’s climate, as well as to try growing foods from their homeland here. Grow North Farm, a project of Anchorage Community Land Trust and Catholic Social Services, launched its sixth season last week with a Thursday Grow North Marketplace. Its farm stand will operate through the summer from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
The Fairbanks animal shelter is overwhelmed with surrendered dogs
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter is at capacity for dogs, with limited options for those that can’t be adopted out quickly. Earlier this week, a chorus of barks and cries coming from dogs looking for new homes filled the shelter’s kennel rooms. The facility is seeing at least twice as many dogs being dropped off as adopted out, said shelter operations supervisor Kimberly Imbert.

Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery wins certification
Juneau, AK – The Certified Seafood Collaborative (CSC) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery (white, brown, and pink shrimp) for all five Gulf states and federal waters has achieved Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification. This is the first shrimp fishery certified to the RFM Standard.
Petersburg’s tribe works with Forest Service to repair Harvey Lake cabin
Petersburg’s tribe will repair a U.S. Forest Service cabin south of town, in collaboration with the federal agency. Harvey Lake cabin was built 60 years ago on Woewodski Island. It hasn’t been open to the public for the better part of a decade, because it needs a new foundation and deck. Carin Christensen is with the U.S. Forest Service.
