Garrett Leyva sentenced to life in prison for double murder
A convicted murderer was sentenced to two life sentences with no chance of parole after being convicted of killing two young people in Hanford. Garrett Leyva was convicted of stabbing to death his ex-girlfriend, Ryan Hulbert, and her brother, Zachary. Leyva was angered by the break-up which led him to kill the siblings in 2021, according to police. He admitted to the killings in a 911 call shortly after committing the crimes.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed ban on smartphone use in California schools would do more harm than good
A statewide ban on smartphone use in schools would run into the same enforcement problems as local restrictions – while also taking agency away from the school community. At Rocklin High School, uneven enforcement already hinders school administrators’ efforts to keep phones out of the classroom. The phone pocket policy, for example, is applied differently from teacher to teacher, creating friction between staff and frustration among students. Newsom’s proposal does not specify whether students would be allowed to keep their phones with them during the school day. If they are, this will continue to be an issue regardless of whether the rule comes from the principal or from the governor.

Ohio man arrested in Cedar City for allegedly kidnapping a California girl
CEDAR CITY — An Ohio man was found Wednesday at a Cedar City gas station with a California teen who had been reported kidnapped.
