Sheriff provides details surrounding Lake Henry drownings
Kingsbury County, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A relaxing evening on the water became a nightmare. Two women from out of state were visiting friends and swimming on Lake Henry, Southeast of De Smet, Wednesday night when winds quickly rose as a storm blew through. They were unable to get out of the water and drowned.

KINGSBURY COUNTY —The severe weather that struck in and around Brookings on Wednesday evening also took the lives of two women on Lake Henry in Kingsbury County. The women were caught on the lake by the weather, according to a social media post by the Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency responders found them on the shore of the lake and life-saving efforts took place there and at a nearby hospital, but it wasn’t enough.
Two women drowned on Lake Henry during Wednesday storms
Two women died Wednesday on Lake Henry, when strong winds from a thunderstorm overturned they’re personal flotation devices. The Lake Preston Fire Department and the Kingsbury County Sheriff’s Office were out storm watching on Wednesday when they received a call requesting assistance for a female victim who was found on the shore of Lake Henry. A second victim was then located on the shore near her. CPR was performed and they were transported to the hospital where both females were pronounced dead. It is believed they were in the lake on their personal flotation devices when the wind picked up and they were overcome by the waves. At this time it’s not believed that life jackets were used.
