    Maroon boys finish third; Lady Maroons take fourth at GNC championships

    IRON MOUNTAIN — Marquette and Kingsford walked away with Great Northern Conference titles at Monday’s GNC Championships at Pine Grove Country Club.

    Kingsford won the girls’ GNC crown with a combined score of 388, putting the Flivvers six strokes ahead of Marquette, who took second after carding a 394.

    Escanaba was one stroke behind the Lady Sentinels in third place at 395, while Menominee racked up a 419 to take fourth. Gladstone brought up the rear in fifth place with a 558, more than 130 strokes behind the Lady Maroons.

    Marquette emerged from a crowded field to win the boys’ GNC title with a 304.

    Escanaba (327) clipped Menominee (330) by three strokes to nab second place, while Gladstone (331) was a single stroke behind the Maroons in fourth place. Kingsford (343) was fifth.

    Jonah Slawinski paced the Maroon boys with a 42 on the front-nine and a 38 on the back end, finishing with an 80, which tied him with Gladstone’s Deegan Miron and Marquette’s Boden Moore for sixth overall in the individual standings.

    Jacob Schultz and Keegan Wickstrom both carded 82, putting the Menominee duo in a six-way deadlock for tenth place.

    Nathan Schultz (86) and Connor Coduti (93) rounded out the Maroon boys’ scorecard.

    Marquette’s Easton Aho and Kaleb Chipelewski tied for the top spot in the individual standings at 29, while Gladstone’s Matt Meyer (26) was three strokes behind in third place.

    Aho, Moore and Chipelewski both garnered All-GNC First Team Honors, as did fellow Sentinel Jack Pond and Kingsford’s Lance Harry.

    Slawinski and Wickstrom made the All-GNC Second Team after helping the Maroons finish third in final GNC standings with 16 points, just one point ahead of fourth-place Gladstone.

    Slawinski racked up 44.6 points for Menominee, ninth best in the GNC, while Wickstrom accounted for 39.5, the 11th-most in the conference.

    Despite boasting GNC Player of the Year Bryson Lancour, Escanaba still finished second behind Marquette by one stroke, with the Sentinels edging the Eskymos 32-31.

    Lexi Marineau paced the Maroon girls with an even 100, putting her seventh overall.

    Mackenzie Doyle (102) finished in a three-way tie with Marquette’s Kylie Smith and Kingsford’s Maddy Zeuske for 10th place.

    Marineau and Doyle both collected All-GNC First Team recognition. Marineau was fifth in the GNC with 59.5 points, while Doyle was close behind in sixth with 56.

    Anna Axtell’s 108 afternoon tied her with Esky’s Dani Hughes and Marquette’s Hayden Schetter for 14th overall, while Ava Chouinard was one stroke behind at 109.

    Abby Luke, the girls’ GNC Player of the Year, topped the individual field with a low-round score of 86. Kingford’s Bryonna Sanders took second with an 89, while Esky’s Kamrie Scott (92) was third.

    Sanders, Scott and Kingsford’s Grace Maki make up the rest of the girls’ All-GNC First Team.

    Kingsford finished atop the girls’ GNC standings with 30 points. Escanaba (26) was second with Marquette (26) in third, while Menominee (16) took fourth and Gladstone (7) placed fifth.
