KINGSPORT, Tenn. ( WJHL ) — A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was caught on camera helping a dog get out of traffic in the pouring rain in Kingsport on Friday afternoon.

Trooper Lance Willis told News 2’s sister station WJHL that he was driving on Fort Henry Drive when he noticed slowed traffic ahead.

Initially, he thought traffic had slowed due to a crash, but once he got closer, he noticed a German Shepard walking slowly in traffic amid the pouring rain.

Willis pulled into the center turn lane and turned his emergency lights on. With traffic stopped, he called the dog over and opened the back door to his cruiser. The German Shepard slowly walked over and jumped in.

After pulling into a nearby parking lot, the dog was turned over to animal control.

Willis said the dog was wearing a collar. He hopes the owner sees the video so they will know their pet was found safe.
