    Fun Fest offers plenty for sports fans, outdoor enthusiasts

    KINGSPORT — Kingsport’s Fun Fest includes a variety of activities for sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts during its nine-day run. The fun starts Friday, July 19, and continues through Saturday, July 27.

    Here’s a look at the sports- and outdoors-related events on tap:

    Tournaments

    • Pickle in the Park (sponsored by Kingsport Parks and Recreation) is July 19-20 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Riverview Pickleball Courts. Preregistration is required. There are divisions for senior (55 and older), mixed doubles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles and youth. The registration fee is $40 per team.

    • The Fun Fest Wiffleball Tournament (sponsored by Hales Chapel Christian Church, Down to Earth and The Lollipop Shop) for teams of players ages 15 and under will be held July 19-20, July 22-23 and July 25 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Sandlot Wiffleball Park, 280 Hales Chapel Road, in Gray. Team rosters can include up to 10 players, but only six will play in the field. The championship game will be played at the Miracle Field in Kingsport. All equipment is provided. Players are encouraged to wear sneakers; no cleats are allowed. Event parking will be in the upper lot at Hales Chapel Christian Church. The entry fee is $25 per team.

    • The Fun Fest Outdoor Volleyball Tournament (sponsored by Kingsport Parks and Recreation) is July 20-21 from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Eastman Park at Horse Creek, 2969 Sullivan Gardens Parkway. Pre-registration is required by July 17 to play. However, spectators are welcome. The tournament is a two-day event on grass. Women’s triples and men’s doubles are offered on Saturday. Reverse coed doubles and coed quads are offered on Sunday.

    • The Fun Fest Adult One Pitch Coed Softball Tournament (sponsored by Kingsport Parks and Recreation and Wheelhouse Print & Design) will be held July 22-23 from 6-10 p.m. at Brickyard Park. Spectators are welcome at all games.

    • The Putt-Putt Fun Fest Tournament (sponsored by Putt-Putt Golf Course) is Tuesday, July 23, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Putt-Putt on West Stone Drive. The free 18-hole tournament features eight divisions with trophies awarded to the lowest score in each division. All ages welcome. Free tickets are required. Tickets can be picked up at the Fun Fest Store in the Kingsport Chamber or at Putt-Putt Golf Course, located at 346 W. Stone Drive.

    • The Basketball Knockout Tournament (sponsored by West Colonial Hills Baptist Church) is Wednesday, July 24, from 3-7:30 p.m. at the church, located at 1205 Kendrick Creek Road. Kids rounds begin at 3 p.m. with adult rounds at 6 p.m. There will be cash prizes for the tournament winners and door prize opportunities for all participants and attendees. Free preregistration is required. Register online at wchbc.org.

    • The Eagles Nest Disc Golf Tournament (sponsored by Kingsport Park and Recreation) is Friday, July 26, from 5-9 p.m. at the Borden Park Disc Golf Course. Pro, advanced, intermediate, women, novice and junior divisions will be offered. Register online through the City of Kingsport’s CivicRec site. The registration fee is $5 per person.

    Other activities

    • The FiA Ladies Workout (sponsored by Females in Action) is July 20 at 7:30 a.m. at Centennial Park. FiA Northeast Tennessee is a community of women whose mission is to make each other stronger in all areas of their lives. The group hosts free, peer-led, outdoor workouts for women. All ages and fitness levels are encouraged to join. Bring a mat and hand weights if you have them, some water, and a positive attitude. Additional FiA Ladies Workouts will be held July 22 at 6 p.m.; July 23 at 5:30 a.m.; July 25 at 6 p.m.; and July 27 at 7:30 am.

    • The Fun Fest Fishing Derby (sponsored by Optimist Club of Colonial Heights and TWRA) will be Saturday, July 20, from 8-10 a.m. at Warriors’ Path State Park. The free fishing event is open to children ages 4 to 16. Children under 10 must have adult supervision. Anyone over age 12 must have a valid fishing license. Free registration is available at the Fun Fest store on onsite the day of the event.

    • Birding Kingsport will host a series of one-hour guided bird walks, beginning on Saturday, July 20, at 8 a.m. at the Fort Patrick Henry Dam. Other walks will be held July 22 at Warriors’ Path State Park (meet in the parking area on Duck Island) and Thursday, July 25, on the Kingsport Greenbelt (meet in the Riverfront Seafood parking lot). The walks are open to all levels of interest and will be easy walks. The walks are sponsored by Riverfront Seafood, Birding Kingsport and the Tennessee Ornithological Society.

    • Niswonger Children’s Network’s Crazy 8s 8K, Almost Crazy 3K Run/Walk and Little 8s Youth Field Day will be held Saturday, July 20, at J. Fred Johnson Stadium. The field day is from 6-8 p.m. The Almost Crazy 3K Run/Walk begins at 7:58 p.m. followed by the Crazy 8s 8K run at 8:58 p.m.

    • The Spin, Sprint and Splash Kids Triathlon (sponsored by Kingsport Parks and Recreation) will be held Monday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Kids Central. Participants will ride their bikes, race through the field and splash through the splash pad. Bring a bike and helmet. Participants will be divided by ages.

    • The Fun Fest Pool Party (sponsored by the City of Kingsport and Kingsport Aquatic Center) is Monday, July 22, from 4-8 p.m. at the Kingsport Aquatic Center. Admission is $5 or $4 if you’re wearing a current Fun Fest T-shirt.

    • F3 (Fitness, Fellowship & Faith) Men’s Workouts (sponsored by F3) will be held Tuesday, July 23, and Thursday, July 25, at 5:30 a.m. for men of all ages and fitness levels. Participants are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early for instructions. Gloves are recommended. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

    • A baseball skills camp (sponsored by Wheelhouse Print & Design and Jones Sports Management) will be held from Tuesday, July 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Domtar Park for children ages 6-13. Preregistration is $15 per player (includes a shirt). Registration onsite is $20 (includes a shirt, if available).

    • The 13th Annual Wolf Run at Bays Mountain Park (part of the Skelton Law Racing Series) will be held Tuesday, July 23, starting at 6:30 p.m. The seven-mile trail race starts and finishes beside the Wolf Habitat at Bays Mountain. Race-day registration ($50) begins at 5 p.m. at the Farmstead Museum at Bays Mountain. The course closes at 1 hour, 45 minutes. Post-race celebration refreshments and awards will be presented at the Farmstead.

    • Dollar Day at Bays Mountain (sponsored by Bays Mountain Park) is Wednesday, July 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission for the day is reduced to $1 per car.

    • Fun Fest Night at the Ballpark (sponsored by the Kingsport Axmen) is Thursday, July 25, at 7 p.m. The Axmen will face the Bristol Stateliners. Tickets are required but are discounted to $5 if purchased in advance at the Fun Fest store inside the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce.

    • Moonlight Hike at Bays Mountain (sponsored by Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium, the Tennessee Eastman Hiking & Canoeing Club, and the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew) is Thursday, July 25, from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Spend the evening hiking around the reservoir along Lakeside Trail. Free ticket required. Participants can register online through the City of Kingsport’s CivicRec site or in person at Bays Mountain’s nature center. The parking fee is $7 per vehicle.
