    Hikes, wildlife take center stage at Warriors' Path

    KINGSPORT — Warriors’ Path State Park has another week of free Summer in the Park activities on tap for visitors of all ages. Hike easy and challenging trails, meet wildlife large and small, or enjoy crafts and games.

    Preregistration is not required, and all of the activities are free to the community.

    THURSDAY, JULY 18

    10 a.m. — ANIMAL CHARADES: An old favorite with a natural twist. See who can act out the best critter. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    11:30 a.m — WEATHER OR NOT: Come share some old-timey weather folklore and some modern-day wisdom. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    1 p.m. — FINGER WEAVING: Our ancestors had looms for weaving. We may not have looms, but if you “give us a hand,” we can show you another way to weave. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    2:30 p.m. — CORN HUSK DOLLS CIRCLE: Come listen to a traditional Native American tale on the origins of the corn husk doll. Then learn how to make one for yourself. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    4:30 p.m. — CAPTURE THE FLAG: Step back in time and enjoy a Tennessee history-themed game of capture the flag. Wear sturdy shoes; be prepared to run. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

    5 p.m. — RIVERBANK STROLL: This green river valley has seen generations of travelers. This evening, we’ll travel together and search for signs of wildlife and the people who came before us. Meet at the main campground bath house.

    6 p.m. — BIRD UNO: Everyone knows this fun, classic card game. Come experience the birdy twist. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

    7 p.m. — NOISY TOYS: How did the pioneer children make music or noise? Make your very own “musical” instrument with a few simple things from nature. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to create some “beautiful music.” (Rain site: Main bath house)

    9 p.m. — NIGHT SOUNDS: Nature is full of sounds when the sun goes down. Come find out whose noise is whose. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a short slide show of the creatures who “talk” in the night. (Rain site: Former pool entrance)

    FRIDAY, JULY 19

    9 a.m. — ANIMAL TRACK DRAWING: Learn to track down local wildlife. Use your creative skills at the same time. Meet at the main bath house.

    10 a.m. — WHO AM I: Let’s play a game of 20 questions with a natural twist. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    11:30 a.m. — LEAF ID BOOKLET: Discover the stories about our green neighbors, then use your knowledge to create your own leaf booklet. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    1 p.m. — JUNIOR RANGERS, TRAIL CLEANUP: Begin to earn your Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the main bath house. Be prepared to get dirty.

    2:30 p.m. — BUG QUEST: Let’s see what discoveries we can make about our park through the insects we find on this bug quest. Meet at the Boundless Playground.

    4:30 p.m. — LAKESHORE WALK: Let’s enjoy a nice half-mile walk along the lakeside to take a deeper look into how we can help the nature around us. Meet at the main bath house.

    6:30 p.m. — HIKE PAW PAW CREEK: Come hike a remote wetland trail and discover the natural diversity in these lush, green woods. Meet at the Mountain Bike Trail parking lot and wear sturdy footwear.

    7 p.m. — OLD-TIMEY GAMES: Try some games from the early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    9 p.m. — TENNESSEE TALES: Enjoy new insights into Tennessee folklife as we share some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Former pool entrance)

    SATURDAY, JULY 20

    9 a.m. — HIKE THE BONEYARD: Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’ Path, full of geologic discovery. This will be a challenging 2- to 3-mile hike, so be sure to wear comfortable clothes, good hiking shoes, and bring plenty of drinking water. Meet at the park’s Mountain Bike Trail parking area, at the end of Freeman Road in Blountville.

    11:30 a.m. — MAKE A SUNDIAL: Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some bright discoveries. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    1:30 p.m. — MAGNIFYING GLASS STROLL: Use your eyes and some handy little magnifiers to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath house to begin a short discovery walk.

    3 p.m. — WALKING TREES, FLYING PLANTS: Meet at the Open Air Chapel to show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    5 p.m. — CHALK CRITTERS: What’s at home here? Decorate the park with sketches of park wildlife “at home” in their habitats. Meet at the Boundless Playground.

    9 p.m. — ANIMAL SHADOWS: Come help us bring creatures alive through the art of shadow puppetry. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight and a big imagination. Meet at the main bath house.

    SUNDAY, JULY 21

    9 a.m. — WORSHIP SERVICE: Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service sponsored by Colonial Heights Baptist Church at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Former pool entrance)

    MONDAY, JULY 22

    3:30 p.m. — TURKEY TALK: Learn about our biggest native game bird. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    6 p.m. — ANIMAL ARCHITECTS: Come learn about one of Tennessee’s most notorious architects, the beaver, and how they make a nice home for themselves and others. Meet at the main bath house.

    9 p.m. — FLASHY FIREFLIES: Join us for a short talk on fireflies and then catch (and release) some fireflies with park staff. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

    TUESDAY JULY 23

    9 a.m. — POPSICLE STICK WEAVING: Come try your hand at a simple weaving project using popsicle sticks and yarn. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    10:30 a.m. — SCAVENGER HUNT: Use the clues to find out more about Warriors’ Path. You might win a prize, and you’ll surely win lots of exciting discoveries. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to begin the hunt.

    Noon — WATER’S EDGE WALK: Enjoy a mid-day walk along the Lakeshore Trail to explore the nature around us and our role in it. Meet at the main bath house.

    2 p.m. — SPOTLIGHT STROLL: Let’s shine our light on some bright natural discoveries. Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit walk.

    3:30 p.m. — ANIMAL GROUPS BINGO: Discover new insights into our unique and different animal groups. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    5 p.m. — ANIMAL HOMES: Meet some small “guest speakers” and discover more about who is “at home” here at the park. Come to the Open Air Chapel to find out about their habitats, and ours. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    6 p.m. — HIKE THE DARWIN’S REVENGE TRAIL: Come spend several hours in one of the most beautiful and wildest parts of the park. Be sure to wear good walking shoes and comfortable clothes, and bring plenty of drinking water. Meet at the Mountain Bike Trail parking lot.

    9 p.m. — BAT AND MOTH: Use your ears and “bug hunting” skills to see if you could survive a night out in the woods and fields. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    WEDNESDAY JULY 24

    9 a.m. — TISSUE PAPER FLOWERS: Join us for a flower-themed craft while learning some more about native wildflowers. Meet at the main bath house.

    10:30 a.m. — KNOT TYING: Be “knot” afraid of this important skill to many outdoor activities. Come learn some basic knots at the Open Air Chapel. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    Noon — LIFE UNDER LOGS: Join park staff for a half-mile hike along the Lakeshore Trail to hunt for the little critters that love to hide under logs and figure out why they’re so important to the park. Meet at the main bath house.

    2 p.m. — FIELD SWEEP: Help us “sweep up” some field discoveries. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

    4 p.m. — TAG: Meet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. (Rain site: Main bath house)

    5:30 p.m. — TREE FRISBEE: Come have a flying good time and find out more about park trees at the same time. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

    6:30 p.m. — SPIDER SCAVENGER HUNT: Come see how good your spidey-senses are with this spider-themed scavenger hunt. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to see how fast you can find some multi-legged friends.

    9 p.m. — TENNESSEE SPIDERS: Come find out about our most common spiders through a slide-illustrated talk, then use some of your new knowledge to find spiders in the night. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.
