New law makes it easier for Michigan prisons to release people in poor health
DETROIT (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a law Tuesday that would make it easier for people to be released from Michigan prisons if they’re in debilitating health and considered to be a minimal risk to the public. The new law replaces a 2019 law that was seen as vague and hard to apply. Only one person had been released, according to FAMM, an advocacy group that works for changes in criminal justice systems across the country. The Michigan parole board will have authority to release someone to a medical facility, hospice or a home, especially if they have a life expectancy of less than 18 months. “Their needs are too much for the Corrections Department and they’re not a risk to public safety,” said Maria Goellner, director of state policy at FAMM.

Teen Charged In Beecher Shooutout
An 18-year-old suspect in a shootout in Beecher on June 25 was arrainged this week. Police in the Genesee County community responded to a home on Hilton Lane after an SUV parked in front, with three teens getting out and assaulting someone in the yard. Gunfire erupted between an occupant of the SUV and someone else nearby. 17-year-old Khamani Lindsey was killed while another 17-year-old was critically injured.

Crime Stoppers offering reward for information on Flint murder
FLINT, Mich. (WNEM) – Crime Stoppers of Flint and Genesee County is asking for information after a woman was murdered in Flint on Sunday, July 21. Crime Stoppers said 30-year-old Shanquice “Que Que” Love was shot to death in a Travel Inn parking lot near S. Dort Highway on Flint’s east side at about 2 p.m. on Sunday.
