Students enrolled in the Workforce Innovation are Opportunity Act Youth Program are excelling in their academics at Lenoir Community College.
LCC’s WIOA program helps young people receive an education and enter the workforce. Alejandro Gonzalez Bautista of Albertson and Savannah Boseman of Goldsboro are pursuing associate degrees in criminal justice through the program and have made the President’s List, which requires students to be enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours, achieve a grade point average of 4.0, and not enroll in any class numbered below 100.
Gonzalez enrolled in the program in July 2023 and completed his adult high school diploma at LCC in the following month. He then enrolled in the criminal justice degree program and has earned all A’s and 16 credit hours since enrollment. He plans to continue his education at a state university, and his career goal is to become an attorney specializing in intellectual property law.
Boseman enrolled the program in spring of 2022, earning her high school equivalency diploma in March 2022. She began criminal justice technology in May 2022 and has earned all A’s maintaining a 4.0 grade point average since that time. She is on track to graduate in May. While balancing academics, she serves as president of LCC’s Student Government Association and is involved in all campus activities. She has been accepted into Western Carolina University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Her goal is to work with State Bureau of Investigation as a detective/investigator specializing in human trafficking and crimes against children division.
Andrea Mullens Scott of La Grange is enrolled in graphic arts an imagining technology and has maintained a cumulative 3.5 GPA since enrolling in Spring of 2022. Edward Miranda-Perez of Dudley is enrolled in engineering and has a 3.5 GPA. Both students made the dean’s list for Fall 2023. The dean’s list is comprised of students who are enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours, have achieved a grade point average from 3.25 through 3.99, are not enrolled in any class numbered below 100, and have no grade lower than a “C.”
WIOA participant Michael Anderson of Snow Hill is pursuing an associate degree in criminal justice, and while he was not enrolled in 12 credit hours to be considered full time he is excelling with a 4.0 GPA after completing summer and fall semesters last year.
“There are so many WIOA participants that are doing an awesome job exceeding the required 2.0 GPA requirement in their associate degree programs,” said career adviser Tracey Price. “We are so proud of all of them.”
“Other WIOA participants who are doing well are Tyrell and Tahir Hill of La Grange, Kendall Jones of Snow Hill and Jamie Merritt, Anastasia Mays and Jitsuave Lassiter, all of Kinston,” career adviser Deb Blondin added.
Both Price and Blondin said working with these students and helping them reach their goals is the best job a person could have. “These kids work hard, overcome challenging life situations, dealing with timelines and requirements that can be stressful, yet they keep on keeping on and we couldn’t be prouder of them,” Price said.
