KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — The North Carolina Global TransPark had its first Ace Academy Wednesday in Kinston.

The four-day aviation school helps children in Lenoir and Greene counties who are interested in aviation to learn all about it. They are taught real-life aerodynamics on a smaller scale to help them figure out if it’s something they want to pursue.

“What we’re doing is we’re providing them with an education of nomenclature of parts of the planning and how it’s described, how things are related,” Vice President of the Kinston Aero Modelers Club John Barry said.

“We go through how it’s built, what the different building processes are with the different types of plans are. We talk about maneuvers, how to fly the planes, and then we take them out on the field and actually show them how to fly. We put them hands on with an actual pilot and let them fly a plane”.

The camp isn’t just for children who are thinking about it as a career but also for those who want a fun hobby. Barry said it’s also a good way to get them outside.
