SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- FireSafe Santa Cruz County announced Friday that it has completed its latest Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) home assessor training.

HIZ Assessors are training to visit sites, conduct a guided walk-through with the resident and provide real-time feedback about information related to home hardening and defensible space to the resident, according to the Santa Cruz County.

The training consisted of approximately 25 volunteers for Santa Cruz County from Boulder Creek/Summit areas down through Aptos and Corralitos, according to Fire Safe Council of Santa Cruz County.

"The purpose of the FireSafe Council of Santa Cruz County is to educate and mobilize the people of Santa Cruz County to protect their lives, homes, community, and environment from wildfire," wrote FireSafe Council of Santa Cruz County in a press release.

People interested in receiving an assessment for home hardening and defensible space on their property can sign up using this link: https://www.firesafesantacruz.org/HIZ . A volunteer with FireSafe Council will get in touch.

FireSafe said that due to staffing issues, they are not currently serving the Watsonville area. People who live in Bonny Doon, please contact the Bonny Doon Fire Safe Council at http://www.bdfsc.org/ to have an assessment completed through them.
