SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The City of Santa Cruz passed a rental cap on Tuesday that would restrict landlords from raising rent to no more than 10% per year, according to the council meeting Tuesday.

This ordinance is one effort that the city is taking to help prevent landlords from excessively raising rent in government-assisting living developments.

According to the city, this includes the Saint George residencies in downtown Santa Cruz. Last week, KION reported that these people, specifically, were concerned they wouldn't be able to afford a rental increase and even may end up homeless.

The City Council said that they prevented the rent increase by approving the ordinance, leaving some residences grateful.
