SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Santa Cruz City Council announced that they've rejected a proposal that would have eased rental restrictions on hundreds of accessory dwelling units (ADU) within the city limits.

A city report stated that changes would have applied to 550 ADU's built before 2020.

The proposal included allowing property owners to build and rent-out their ADUs without needing to live on the property.

In addition to this, the changes would have allowed ADUs to be sold separately from the main house like in the instance of a condominium.

The council ended up voting 4-to-2 to reject the plans, citing worries over driving the cost of housing up instead of helping make housing more affordable locally.

How is not reducing restrictions on ADUs going to keep housing costs down? It doesn’t make sense to me. More ADUs would mean more affordable housing units.
