ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The City of Ellensburg’s plan to build an overnight shelter for people experiencing homelessness has been delayed, but city officials plan to partner with Kittitas County to ensure people have a safe place to go this winter.
Kittitas County Jail Implements Innovative Inmate Safety Program
The OverWatch system provides KCJ with valuable new inmate health monitoring and response capabilities. The system enables remote, real-time monitoring of critical inmate health metrics and alerts Jail staff to potential threats and medical emergencies, enabling prompt intervention. OverWatch sensors can be distributed to inmates during the critical jail intake period, when the greatest risks to an inmate’s health often emerge. Inmates with persistent known health risks can also be monitored and protected. This technology is designed to be instrumental in preventing incidents before they escalate, ensuring inmates' and staff's ongoing safety and well-being.
Strike teams mobilized for potential wildfires in Kittitas, Yakima and Klickitat counties
State fire assistance has been mobilized to pre-position firefighting resources to be ready to respond to potential wildfires in Kittitas, Yakima and Klickitat counties, state officials announced Wednesday. Three strike teams have been mobilized. The precautionary help was made under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan, officials said. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources at 5 p.m. July 9 at the request of Lower Columbia Fire Defense region coordinator and Klickitat County Fire District 3 Chief Wesley Long. Officials said the three counties had experienced multiple days of hot, dry and windy conditions. The areas were also under “red flag warnings” from the National Weather Service. Personnel from the State Fire Marshal’s Office are working remotely to coordinate the dispatching of resources.
Chamber of Commerce, CenterFuse in talks to merge
The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and CenterFuse, Ellensburg’s public development authority, are working toward a merger. It’s with some “understandable trepidation,” Mayor Rich Elliott said during a city council meeting in June. Burn Ban Extends to All Kittitas County Saturday July 13
- Kittitas County is currently experiencing dry conditions which elevate the risk of wild land fires. In the interest of public safety, starting at 0001 hrs. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, a burn ban will be in effect encompassing all of Kittitas County. This is in addition to the lower county burn ban put in place on July 9, 2024. The Town of South Cle Elum and the Cities of Cle Elum and Roslyn will also be joining in the ban.
