70 homes in Cherokee destroyed by flooding
State officials estimate 2000 homes were damaged or destroyed during recent flooding in northwest Iowa. After previous flooding in Cherokee, FEMA bought out 40 properties. Another 70 homes in Cherokee were destroyed in this year’s flooding and Cherokee Mayor Craig Schmidt said he doesn’t know where people will go.

–The Whittemore City Council approved a resolution on Monday that will call for the removal of any “timed” water softeners within the community. Bailey Lux, the 14-year-old warrior from Carroll was reunited with her two favorite basketball stars during the Indiana Fever and Las Vegas Aces game last (Tuesday) night. Lux, who has been battling MPNST Sarcoma for the past two years, discovered in May after starting a low dose oral chemo, that the treatment was not effective and the cancer spread very quickly since the last scans. Bailey’s father, Kraig Lux, often referred to as Kj, says she is now entering a new chapter of the fight, chemo free.

Sheldon police chief submits resignation
SHELDON—Sheldon Police Department chief Scott Burtch has submitted his resignation with the city. Burtch will remain the chief until Aug. 30, when his resignation will be effective. Burtch submitted his future resignation to Sheldon city manager Sam Kooiker on Monday, July 1, and the city council will review it during its meeting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10.
