LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — In Lafayette, some short-term rental owners say they’re over it.  Many short-term property owners have been operating in residential-single family zoning for years but that’s in the past.

The new rule is being put the test with a rezoning request before the city council. The Interim Director of Community Development and Planning  Ann Famoso explains the details.

A short-term rental license under the new rule is an ordinance approved by the previous council.

“Basically it disallowed short term rentals in the single family zoning district and implemented a licensing for short term rentals effective April 1,” Famoso explained.

On Tuesday, a Lafayette property owner is requesting a license approval for the now designated residential mixed zone area.

“October 1 all short-term rentals in residential family zoning is not allowed. The request tonight is to rezone the property to residential mixed to allow a short term rental,” Famoso explained.

The process for getting an approved license for the residential mixed zoning area has a few steps.

“A survey, recommendation by the zoning commission and action by the city council,” Famoso said.
