ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — Port Barre residents are mourning the loss of Port Barre High School teacher Summer Le of Bunkie after she was involved in an ATV crash along Highway 737 early Sunday morning.

According to State Police, Le was riding in the passenger seat of a side-by-side off road U.T.V. With Ryan Lormand of Arnaudville when 60-year-old Joseph Davis struck them from behind in his truck causing them to eject from the U.T.V. Lormand was rushed to the hospital, but Le was pronounced dead at the scene.

To many people in the community, Le was more than just a teacher. She was one of the founding board members of a non-profit organization called The Gumbo Foundation , which works to help raise money and awareness for families with sick children. Tim Marks, a long time friend of Le, says she was always involved in the community and will be missed by everyone who knew her.

“If there’s something going on that had a good cause, Summer was attached to it,” said Marks. “Anyone you talked to would rave about her and her connection with the kids and the families, and she just go above and beyond at every turn and to make sure she took care of people.”

Marks asks the community to continue to honor Le for what she meant to everyone.

“Honor her memories. Cherish her memories. Please spread all the good things she’s done,” said Marks.

St. Landry Parish Superintendent Milton Batiste III issued a statement regarding Le’s passing.

“The entire St. Landry Parish community is grieving this immeasurable loss. Mrs. Le’s dedication to our E.S.S. (Exceptional Student Services) students and families exemplified the very best in educating every child. She will be dearly missed,” said Batiste.

Joseph Davis was arrested following the incident and booked in the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center for vehicular homicide.
