ST. MARTINVILLE, La. ( KLFY ) – A state of emergency has been declared in St Martin Parish after a week of intense weather caused widespread storm damage.

The state of emergency for the parish is to bring awareness of the assistance needed in municipalities affected by the Severe weather. In St. Martinville, Mayor Jason Willis since the state of emergency has been declared, St. Martinville citizens are able to get help in getting debris and cut up tree limbs removed from the shoulder of the road.

St. Martinsville Mayor Jason Willis said the intense weather caused heavy damage to homes, power lines and trees. Because of this, Mayor Willis says Parish President Pete Delcambre declared a state of emergency for the parish as a whole.

Willis says since the state of emergency has been declared, St. Martinville citizens are able to get help in getting debris and cut up tree limbs removed from the shoulder of the road.

Mayor Willis says in a statement:

“Because we are in a state of emergency, the city of St. Martinville is allowed to go on private property to help our citizens who are faced with a public hazard, such as trees or limbs that are people’s houses, blocking their driveways, about to fall on electric lines, etc… We are not allowed to come on private property and cut, remove, or bring the trees, limbs, debris to the road for anyone. Once the citizen get the tree cut small enough to bring to the shoulder of the road, they can call us because Republic Garbage Service will help and assist us in picking it up from the street, not the yard. Republic Garbage company is awesome and are always willing to help us in our community. This is for only the city of St. Martinville.”

Without the state of emergency for the parish, Willis says everyone would do everything themselves, which would be costly for residents.

“We have the greatest garbage company that we contract with which is Republic Services,” he said. “They called from day one, any help that’s needed, they’re willing to help free of charge.”

Willis said without this, “this would be a fortune for the citizens, especially elderly.”

He said if anyone in St. Martinville needs assistance in picking up tree limbs from the shoulder of the road, to reach out to city hall, council members, or even the mayor. Citizens are reminded in order to receive this assistance, they will have to cut up fallen tree limbs themselves and move them to the shoulder of the road.

St. Martinville Mayor Jason Willis says unless debris and tree limbs are in a dangerous area or have fallen on the roof or fence, homeowners are responsible for cutting them up and moving them to the shoulder of the road to be picked up.

The parish-wide state of emergency will remain in effect until the parish president declares it over.
