EUNICE, La. ( KLFY )– Residents at the South Martin Luther King Complex in Eunice are being threatened with eviction for what they say are unfair reasons.

Angela Simien said she was served an eviction notice after she paid her rent on the eighth of this month, which she said was earlier than other tenants who did not get eviction notices.

“I’m getting evicted for being late, but according to the lease, the rent is not late until the eighth,” Simien said. “That was the day I did try to pay my rent, but she sent it back saying that I couldn’t pay it, that I was evicted.”

Kevin Johnwell, a commissioner for the Eunice Housing Authority, said he doesn’t understand why tenants’ payments are getting rejected.

“They’re in public housing for help,” Johnwell said. “We should, as the board, be able to accommodate them in what they have going on with life.”

Simien appeared before a judge Tuesday and was cleared of her eviction notice.

David Guillory, a commissioner for the Eunice Housing Authority, told News 10 that tenants can reconcile their evictions with the housing authority.

“Sometimes people do get paid at different times of the month, and so if they communicate that to us, they’re not penalized for it,” Guillory said.

“It’s just it’s one of those things, if you’re in housing authority, you might get an eviction notice, but it doesn’t mean we’re going to evict you tomorrow. You have time to reconcile this,” Guillory continued.

Brook LeBleu said she was also threatened with eviction for reasons she believes to be unfair.

“My cousin came one night to my house. She did come spend the night, and then the next day, I get a letter from the office saying that I was going to be evicted if she came back over here because she was banned from here,” LeBleu said.

“I called the office to find out what’s going on about that because she’s never got served a ban notice,” she continued.

LeBleu’s cousin told News 10 that she never signed a trespass notice.

Tenants also complained that they are unable to have guests. The Eunice Housing Authority told News 10 that is a guideline set by the housing authority.

“We’re always looking for people that need housing. And we’re not there to make it hard on people,” Guillory said. “But Housing Authority gives us guidelines, and we have to follow those guidelines.”

The tenants also complained about the security cameras that the Eunice Housing Authority set up around the complex.

“We have no privacy. We can’t have company like we’re in jail,” LeBleu said. “We’re not in jail. We’re in public housing.”

The Eunice Housing Authority said the cameras were installed in light of the violence in the area.

“We want absolutely no violence. We want the best,” Guillory said. “We have to have cameras to ensure that.”

The Eunice Housing Authority said tenants can contact them with concerns.
