BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana lawmakers approved a pay raise for the state superintendent of education at a Friday, Aug. 9 committee meeting.

The joint legislative committee approved a $311,000 base salary with a 3% pay raise eligible starting in August for Cade Brumley. Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education President Ronnie Morris said the new base salary includes pay raises from the last four years Brumley has turned down.

Morris said Brumley’s performance review has “exceeded expectations,” noting that Louisiana has improved in national rankings. According to U.S. News and World Report , Louisiana Pre-K-12 education ranks No. 40.

Before students started going back to the classroom for the new school year, Brumley sent a letter to school system leaders asking for a recommitment to assertive discipline action to combat disruptions at schools.

Brumley is proposing a policy package that includes reducing the number of required yearly training sessions for teachers, tightening student discipline and giving teachers more freedom in lesson planning, according to the Louisiana Department of Education .

“Being an effective teacher is hard work and we seek to make the job more manageable and fulfilling,” said Brumley. “These policies will show support for hard-working teachers across Louisiana as they return to the classroom this year.”

Policies will be considered by BESE during meetings on Aug. 20-21.
