OPELOUSAS, La. ( KLFY ) — An Opelousas man was arrested on drug charges by police during Project Safe Neighborhoods at a local truck stop, authorities said.

Devin Johnson, 38, of Opelousas, was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses.

Project Safe Neighborhood is a nationwide initiative of the U.S. Department of Justice.

“The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office received a grant for Project Safe Neighborhoods to deter and combat illegal activity in regard to firearms, controlled dangerous substances and gang activity in St. Landry Parish,” St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said. This grant allows deputies to target violent crimes and identify violent offenders in order to prosecute on a state or federal level.”

Detectives said they observed suspicious behavior during surveillance in the parking lot of Lucky’s Truck Stop located at 12120 US-190 in Opelousas.

When police approached the vehicle, Johnson fled the scene and was then stopped by police, who found a large bag of marijuana and $700, police said.

The detective then obtained a search warrant for Johnson’s home but found it was abandoned. Further investigation led the police to his girlfriend’s residence in Sunset, where they found a digital scale, vacuum sealer, 5.1 pounds of marijuana, and one-ounce packages containing Moon Rocks (marijuana), authorities said.

Johnson was arrested and taken to the St. Landry Parish Jail. His bond is $52,750.

Anyone with information about illegal drug activity is encouraged to call the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Drug Hotline at 337-948-0970 or 948-1030. All callers remain anonymous and the information is kept confidential.
