NEW IBERIA, La. ( KLFY ) — New Iberia Police said they are investigating a domestic dispute where a woman was shot and killed Saturday night by her ex-husband.

Terry Lynn James Sr., 47, was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on charges of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.

Nikitkia Durham, 47, was identified as the victim by her family. Carolyn Durham, Nikitkia Durham’s sister, said it feels surreal that she is no longer here.

“Arriving on the scene, I saw the gurney and a bag, and I knew my sister was gone”, said Carolyn Durham.

Authorities said they were notified of a shooting on Walton Street Saturday night. When they arrived, they found a man surrendering in the street. Police identified the suspect as James.

Carolyn Durham said her sister’s ex-husband was abusive towards her, and said she is left with many questions on why he allegedly pulled the trigger.

“What really hurts is, he filed for divorce, he divorced her, so you divorced her and killed her, it’s really not making no sense to me,” Carolyn Durham said.

Carolyn Durham said her sister had a big heart, and had love for everyone she crossed paths with.

“She was outgoing, she’d smile, she liked to drink, and she liked to play cards; she was always with her kids, she was just a lovable person, and everybody loved my sister,” Carolyn Durham said.

Carolyn Durham said she has a message for people to be aware of when to leave an abusive relationship.

“When he divorced her, she went on with her life, and he couldn’t handle that. Know the signs; just because you’re out, doesn’t mean you’re safe”, said Carolyn.
