ST. MARY PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — Like many other areas across Acadiana, St. Mary Parish has its fair share of problems with neglected and stray animals.
Alyssa Muse, of Aviary Creature Rescue, showed News 10 some of those issues first had. Muse guided News 10 from Amelia to Franklin to look at the conditions a lot of dogs are going through.
She showed pets in situations such as being chained down to a car with a wire to being tied down to a tree with no shelter, but under the porch of the house in the yard.
News 10 asked Muse what she believes is the reason animals are being put in these types of conditions. She said one of the main issues is minimal breeding control.
“It’s a lack of respect for life,” Muse said. “Shelters are full. We are getting surrenders and picking them up left and right because people just they see that dollar sign and then they don’t realize what they’re getting into.”
Ville Platte animal rescue reflects on progress, challenges Muse said a shortage of resources to hold animals contributes to the issue as well.
“There’s not a lot of room for these animals. They have to euthanize to make space for more and it’s just a viscous cycle,” she said.
Aviary Creature Rescue makes it their mission to save animals in poor conditions. Muse said she and her team are taking the steps to make a difference, but they are asking for the community’s help to step up as well.
“What we’re urging our local governments to do is work with the people and set an example, so don’t ignore them. Setting feeding bans with no other precautions is not going to do anything,” she said.
“Everyone needs to say something when they see cruelty and we can all work together. But it’s going to take a collaborative effort between government, rescues and citizens,” she continued.
