ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — The St. Martinville Chamber of Commerce is beautifying the city with the “Arts on Fire” project.

Of the 50 hydrants slotted to be painted, approximately 30 of them will be given a new coat of yellow paint while 16 of them will be embellished in a design based on the city’s historic heritage and culture.

Mary Desormeaux, chamber president, said the organization thrives on positively impacting citizens and businesses within the community.

“We have also designated sixteen of these hydrants to be painted by local artists with a certain subject on it, and all of the subjects are going to be pertaining to our culture,” Desormeaux said.

St. Martinville will always be a popular destination for visitors, Desormeaux said, but the painted fire hydrants will add another tourist attraction to the historic city.

“They come here for our Acadian heritage, our Creole heritage. We’re known for wonderful food, we’re known for music, we’re known for the beautiful scenery, the swamps and the moss trees. We have beautiful Evangeline Oak and Belle Marie right behind us, so you’re right, we do have a lot to offer,” Desormeaux said.

Desormeaux said the project is scheduled to be completed in September.
