LIVINGSTON PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — A 34-year-old Holden man is facing charges in connection with a July boat crash that killed two people, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced.

Jason Chiasson Jr. was arrested on Thursday and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, five counts of first-degree vehicular negligent injury, careless operation of a vessel and second offense of operating or driving a vessel while impaired, authorities said.

Wildlife and Fisheries said Chiasson was the operator of a 25-foot Sea Fox vessel when he collided with a 25-foot pontoon boat shortly after midnight on July 28 in the Tickfaw River.

“Through the course of the investigation, agents have determined that Chiasson Jr. was impaired at the time of the collision,” Wildlife and Fisheries said.

The crash claimed the lives of Thuy Gustin, 31, of Springfield, and Chase Sharkey, 36, of Greensburg. Three other people were taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries but have since been released.

Wildlife and Fisheries said they were alerted of the incident around 12:17 a.m. on Sunday, July 28. When they arrived on scene, the pontoon boat was heavily damaged and the Sea Fox boat was capsized.

Gustin, who was a passenger on the Sea Fox, was trapped under the capsized vessel, authorities said, but an agent and another individual were able to jump into the water and retrieve her body. She was taken to North Oaks Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Sharkey’s body was recovered from the Tickfaw River around 12:45 p.m. that afternoon, Wildlife and Fisheries said.
