VERMILION PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — Tayler Guidry discovered her strength quite early on, initially challenging bovines before ever handling barbells.

“I managed to flip a 1200-pound cow on her side,” she said.

She embraced powerlifting during her freshman year at Gueydan High School , and with each passing year, she honed her skills.

“First year, I was not good at all. Second year, I was mediocre. My junior year and this past year, my senior year, I began to get really into it and I started getting a lot better,” she said.

By her junior and senior years, Guidry secured two state championships.

“It was exciting. It was different. Felt good. I’m from a tiny little school where we’re like one of the lowest divisions in the state. So being a state champion was pretty much like making history at school,” she said.

Shelby Vice, the assistant coach for Cajun Prep Powerlifting , said Guidry as an excellent ambassador for the Acadiana area.

“She’s a great example of the Acadiana lifestyle building into this state power lifting. So it’s it goes hand in hand. You know, she’s on the farm and she comes back here and she’s like, well, I mean, it’s the same amount of strength. ‘I got to do this’ and ‘I got to do that,'” she said.

Now, Guidry is excited to showcase Gueydan’s strength at the world powerlifting championships in Malta.

“It feels great to be able to bring kind of awareness to that community and represent the community and see where we can turn out, she said.

As for what to try out in Malta…

“The food. I’m a big food person,” Guidry said.
