UPDATE, 8/28/2024, 7:24 p.m.: The Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office said the person whose body was found near Gerald James Dr. is 19-year-old Dallas Lewis, of New Iberia.

UPDATE, 8/28/2024, 5 p.m.: Neighbors of Gerald James Drive said they are shocked after a body was found outside a home early Wednesday, saying the area is normally safe.

Helen Huynh said she heard gunfire around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday night.

“After that, I hear the car run around here but its too dark. I can’t tell,” Huynh said.

Regenia Boutte said the neighborhood is usually a pretty safe place where neighbors look out for each other.

“Everybody is friends here and kind of take care of each other and let each other know what is going on if something ever, which nothing ever really happens like that,” Boutte said.

ORIGINAL: NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – Iberia Parish Deputies are investigating the death of a man.

Early Wednesday morning, the man’s body was found on Gerald James Drive in a front yard of a home. Police say neighbors found the body. One neighbor told KLFY News she heard gunshots around midnight.

Authorities say the man died of a gunshot wound.

The name of the victim has not been released.
