LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — The 2024 Cajun volleyball roster includes four seniors and one graduate student. That one graduate is middle blocker, Cami Hicks .

“I’m looking to leave here holding the most blocks. I’m looking to hold the highest season-hitting percentage and there are a couple others. But I think that the blocking season record and the blocking record overall is what I’m really focused on honing in on,” she said.

There’s a lot on Cami’s agenda for her final season. That drive to want more started back in her hometown of Carthage, Texas.

“There’s little to nothing in Carthage, so like athletics is a huge thing there,” she said.

“So that’s where it all started. It’s just a place for me to channel my competitive needs, my drive, my compassion, and just be a vessel of the Lord because I’m really religious and I just feel like that’s a way for me to really exemplify it in my way,” she continued.

Hicks’ passion for faith began at home with her mother, Dazell, her sister, Raven, and her father, Leon. Cami shares a special bond with her father through their spirituality and their time in the great outdoors.

“I’m really an outside person,” Hicks said. “My daddy is a farmer, so I’m like into ATVs and all of that. So like, you can see me outside riding through any type of pasture, just being outside with my daddy.”

Cami’s connection with her family is one of the most important parts of her life — but a close second would be her teammates.

“So we’re all basically a really close-knit family. But Lauren, Dani, and Sienna, we’re all locked in. We’re basically accountability group partners like we call each other on things and hold each other accountable. We let each other know what’s the difference, what’s not, and we go to church together. It’s just like accountability is the main focus of our friendship, and we hold that so close,” she says.

Cami’s connection with Head Coach Kristi Gray revolves around their four-legged friends.

“Typically, as of late, we talked about our dogs. She has a new dog named Aspen. I have a dog named Tito. And so we talk about them,” Gray said.

“So right now we’re in the works. So getting a playdate set up with my dog is a little while. Tito is very trained and mild-mannered. So I’m hoping Tito rubs off on Aspen. So that’s the goal,” Hicks said.
