IBERIA PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — A 41-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after a delayed incendiary device was ignited at Jeanerette City Hall . In an exclusive interview with News 10, Jeanerette Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr. speaks about the event.

“The incident was a very unfortunate occurrence. I think it was a citizen that was just kind of upset about some things,” the mayor said.

According to Bourgeois, 41-year-old Desmond Eugene arrived at city hall on his bike in an attempt to speak with him. When the mayor was unavailable to talk at the time, that is when the device was ignited.

“I ended my meeting and when I walked out the door, I kind of looked to my left and said, ‘that is strange looking thing.’ then I saw the little flame. I saw how it was rigged up, and said ‘oh man.’ I’m thinking this is going to blow,” Bourgeois said.

Several people were inside the building at the time of the fire but no injuries were reported. The fire did not cause any structural damage to the building.

Eugene faces charges of aggravated arson and the manufacture and possession of a delayed action incendiary device, according to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
