Calcasieu Parish deputies injured in weekend boating crash

LAKES CHARLES, La. ( KLFY ) — Two Calcasieu Parish sheriff deputies were injured in a single-vessel boating incident on Saturday, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.

According to a news release , the incident happened around 3 p.m. Saturday on the West For Calcasieu River.

Two deputies were aboard a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Enforcement Unit vessel when the vessel struck an object in the water before hitting a tree, authorities said.

The two deputies were taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. One deputy has been released from hospital care. The other remains hospitalized, but is in stable condition, authorities said.

Sheriff Stitch Guillory said the incident is a “stark reminder” that no one is immune to boating accidents, including those with extensive training and experience.

“We urge everyone to always stay vigilant and pay close attention when boating,” Guillory said in the news release.

“While we are relieved that the injuries sustained by our deputies are non-life-threatening, they are still serious and they have a road to recovery ahead of them,” the sheriff continued.

The crash remains under investigation by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, according to the Monday news release.
