LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — The deadly shooting at a Georgia school Monday has not only left a community mourning, but concerned parents here in Acadiana with questions on student safety.

When it comes to protecting students and staff throughout Acadiana, the Lafayette Parish School System wants to assure parents that school safety is a priority.

A concerned parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said the climate of school safety is much different now than when she attended grade school

“Back when I was in school, we had school drills that dealt with fire and natural disasters like tornadoes. Now it’s drills for unexpected events, like a shooting, and it’s scary,” she said.

She said after the school shooting in Georgia, she had a conversation with her daughter about active shooter situations. She said it gave her a “huge relief” to know LPSS is being proactive in keeping schools safe.

In a statement provided by an LPSS spokesperson, the school system said the following:

“The tragedy in Georgia underscores Superintendent Touchet’s dedication to the safety of our school, students, and teachers. A safe environment fosters a more productive educational experience and the protocols we have in place should be reassuring to our parents.”

The school system said each of its campuses are equipped with weapons detection systems, are fenced, and staffed with a resource officer. LPSS added that entrances to all of its schools are secured.
