LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — The family of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning is speaking out for the first time.

Rigoberto Sanchez, 27, of Lafayette was killed. Daniel Mendez, Sanchez’s brother, says the family wants answers.

“The way it happened, it was just nonsense, over what? My brother lost his life over what?” said Mendez.

Mendez said he and the family are at a loss of words over his brother’s death, but says they are searching for clues over how and why the shooting took place.

“My concern is first and foremost, where’s the body for one, two what happened, what time did this all occur? We don’t know anything, and that’s our concern, is this a cover up. It sounds like a cover up,” said Mendez.

Mendez said since the shooting the family is starting to acknowledge the difficulty of saying goodbye to his brother forever. He said, though trouble claimed his brother’s life, he will always remember him.

“He did a lot for everybody,” Mendez said. “If you asked the man for a ride he was giving you a ride, if you asked him for help, he gave you help. Drugs got to him, man, and unfortunately the streets took him.”
