THIBODAUX, La. ( WGNO ) — 26 people have been rescued after being trapped inside of housing units in Thibodaux as a result of rising floodwaters from Hurricane Francine.

According to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call reporting the trapped residents around 7:30 p.m.

All of the residents, which included many small children, were safely rescued from the homes. Deputies also reportedly rescued other people from rising waters elsewhere in Thibodaux and in the Kraemer community.

The 26 individuals were taken to the emergency shelter at the Lockport Community Center.

Deputies will reportedly continue to have a greater presence in Lafourche Parish overnight due to the majority of the parish experiencing power outages as well as the curfew which remains in effect until 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12.
