ST. MARY PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — Members of the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief Organization are in St. Mary Parish to help people who were impacted by Hurricane Francine.

“Wherever there’s a disaster where there is a need for us, we will go and try to help,” said Oklahoma volunteer group leader John Parsons.

The organization is a collective group of volunteers from multiple states who come together to help people across the country after a natural disaster.

“We have chainsaw crews to take care of that. Typically, we have feeding crews and all they do is feed people, laundry crews or do laundry for people. So, they got everything. It’s all on trailers,” said another volunteer.

The convention has multiple teams going around the parish helping people like Dorothy Bennett who is about to lose her entire house from storm damage.

“It does make me feel really good, really strong in helping us to know we can get out of here,” Bennett said.

Parsons said the main goal is to help those in need and spread the word of Jesus Christ.

“We were all Christians and we just want the opportunity to help others. And also, to share Jesus Christ with other people,” Parsons said.

Parsons and the rest of the convention vow they will continue to provide assistance as long as it is needed.
