ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — Jobs for America’s Graduates, or “JAG” for short, is a program dedicated to developing high school students to be prepared to take on a career after they’re done with school.

The JAG Program is utilized in schools across the country and gives students the knowledge to use what they learned in school and apply it to a profession.

Students also learn how to be professional, from a good resume to a firm handshake.

“Students have four goals. We have leadership, career development, social awareness, and civic awareness,” said Susan Mouton, JAG specialist.

The program’s president from Northwest High School is Brayden Batiste.

“I’ve learned how to represent myself as a young man. Leadership, Communication skills and career development,” Batiste said.

The JAG Program also gives its students hands-on experience in various fields.

Wednesday is Parish Government Day and they visited Saint Landry Parish Government to learn all about the jobs and career opportunities from the clerk of courts office, all the way to the judge’s seat.

“Students have an opportunity to meet with Mr. Jessie Ballard and his team to learn more about our parish government and how the government works,” Mouston said.

Mouton said the program will only continue to get better.

“This program allows me to mentor them through life after high school. We’ve seen great results 100% graduation rate. Our students are employed. They go to college or they do both,” Mouton said.
