ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — In an ongoing effort to handle blighted and abandoned properties across the parish, Parish President Jessie Bellard said the parish is applying for additional funding to amp up the amount of properties they can attend to.

“There’s a demolition program in our parish that we’re applying for through a community block grant. And the purpose of this grant is to get rid of all of the blighted properties we have in the parish, including the towns and municipalities in our parish,” Bellard said.

Bellard said the parish is relying on residents to reach out to notify them of properties that need attention.

For example, an abandoned property on Threatt Street in Eunice that has two different metal buildings and overgrown grass in the area. Residents have told News 10 that property has caused a lot of issues, such as squatters, alleged drug deals and more.

Bellard said communication is really going to be key if progress is finally going to be made.

Residents can notify parish officials of blighted properties by calling 337-948-3688 or by attending a meeting at the Parish Council Office on Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m.

Bellard said the more people that can attend the meeting on Oct. 1 to bring properties like this to their attention, the more likely they will get that grant funding approved.
