LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — A woman is urging the public to be aware of a possible scam tactic, saying her credit card was stolen when helping a man jumpstart his vehicle.

Darcell Duhon said she was at the CVS off East Broussard and Johnston Street on Thursday when she was approached a man requesting help jumpstarting his vehicle.

“He requested a jump for the vehicle, and he let me know that his battery was in the back of his vehicle in the trunk, and he proceeded to do the jump on his vehicle,” Duhon said.

“He asked to sit in my vehicle to press my gas and one of my old colleagues had come out of CVS she and I were conversing, and he said that he needed a bigger vehicle for his jump at that time, my old colleague let him use her SUV to do the jump,” she continued.

Duhon said the man asked for Duhon to move her car which she permitted him to do so.

“He moved my vehicle and moved her vehicle in the back of his vehicle and after he had done the jump he took off and we got back in our vehicles and noticed our credit cards gone,” she said.

Both Duhon and her colleague’s credit card was gone. Duhon said she figured she misplaced her card.

“I proceeded to look in my car. It was nowhere to be found, and I knew I had just used it. So, yeah, he definitely took our credit cards,” she said.

“I want the community to be aware of what is going on. I feel like this was a scam. If he was brazen enough to take both of our cards within a five minute span. He has done this before,” she continued.

Duhon said she did not suspect anything of the man requesting help.

“He portrayed himself to be a family man. He was driving a nice vehicle. He had a wife. He had a kid, and he also had a dog. So he definitely tricked us into thinking that he was someone to be trusted,” she said.

Luckily all was not lost. Duhon turned off her credit card and her colleague did not have any money on the credit card that was taken.

“This young man took off with absolutely nothing but the community still needs to be warned about a scam that is going on,” Duhon said.

Lafayette Police Department is investigating the matter. Police advise to not let strangers inside of your car.
