LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — Lafayette officials hope a new tax district will attract Buc-ee’s to come to the Hub City and make itself at home.

Earlier this week, an ordinance was introduced to create a subdistrict on I-10 near Louisiana Avenue where the potential Buc-ee’s would be built. If passed, customers who shop at the potential Buc-ee’s would pay 2% more for items purchased at the store.

Mandi Mitchell, president of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, said the proposed ordinance and the increased tax rate would help pay for the construction of the popular travel center.

“That will go back as an incentive to the company so they can choose to locate in Lafayette and what that incentive will do would help offset their cost of investing in locating their store in Lafayette,” Mitchell said.

If constructed in Lafayette, the $82 million establishment will bring up to 150 new jobs , with a starting salary of $17 for workers. Mitchell said the store will not only allow for more taxpayer dollars to be collected from customers but will also give visitors a chance to see what Lafayette is all about.

“Our people are phenomenal, so to have a brand like that will cause people to stop, then they will be more interested to know what else is happening here in this community called Lafayette Louisiana,” Mitchell said.

The ordinance will be up for final adoption by the Lafayette City Council on Oct. 15.
