Destination Louisiane: Downtown Ruston

RUSTON, La. (KTVE/KARD) — In Lincoln Parish, you’ll find a downtown hub that has a variety of activities and things to do for every individual. From shopping to eating to art, and more, Downtown Ruston has made it a point to be the epicenter of this university town.

Downtown Ruston has been here since 1894, people have been coming here since then. And so, in past administrations, through our mayors and our city government, they’ve seen the value of downtown being the epicenter of kind of what happens in our city, and that hasn’t changed. And so, we have worked hard to make sure it is a place that people want to come to. So it’s a little bit more than just stores and things, it’s people and places and really how those things and places make you feel.

As you walk through downtown, you get the feeling of community. There are art murals made by local artists, small businesses run by people in the community, and entertainment sites that serve as the hosts of the many events going on throughout the year.

In the fall, coming up, we’ll have Wine Walk and that’s a really great night for the girls or everybody to get together and come and walk around and see all the stores. And then we also have Pumpkins in the Park, it’s family oriented it’s a movie in Railroad Park. And then from time to time, we’ll have music or other events that like invite everybody and welcome everybody to share the space. So, what it’s really about is finding your community and what works within that community. So one of my favorite things that I get to do is really have an imput on public art. Being a part of what makes this place vibrant and just kind of pop has been really exciting for me.
