Milton to make landfall tonight as major hurricane near Tampa

Hurricane Milton is starting its approach towards the west coast of Florida as it rapidly intensified yesterday to a Category 5 storm. It became one of the strongest Atlantic Basin hurricanes on record when the pressure dropped to 897 millibars on Monday. Milton has weakened slightly and is now at Category 4 strength. No impacts are expected in Acadiana as Milton tracks to Florida.

The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center shows Milton as a major hurricane making landfall just south of Tampa Bay late tonight into Thursday morning. The storm surge across Tampa and the west coast of Florida will be life threatening and devastating.

Milton should begin to slowly weaken before landfall but a Category 4 hurricane is still expected to impact the heart of Florida.
