OPELOUSAS, La. ( KLFY ) — Three dumpsters in St. Landry Parish have stirred up controversy that has led residents to sue parish government.

Richard LeBoeuf with St. Landry Solid Waste says this began on Oct. 2 at a parish council meeting when residents of the Hidden Hills community brought their complaints to the council about the dumpsters, their location and the smell that affects their community.

“Plus, they stick out on the road to some of it,” said Mike Meche, during the meeting. “So, to me, that’s a liability.”

Parish President Jesse Bellard said at the meeting that he and LeBouef would look into the situation and the placement of the dumpsters. Upon inspection, Bellard released this letter to the Bayou State Waste Management requesting them to remove the dumpsters because they are on a parish right-of-way and therefore violate legal guidelines.

LeBoeuf said that he was also instructed to remove trash from the dumpsters before they were removed, but things took a turn.

“Before that could happen, we received a report that there was some legal action that was taken and for us to cease and desist,” LeBoeuf said.

LeBoeuf says it’s going to take as long as the courts need before anything will be done about the dumpsters.

“In reference to our council, we’re going to let the court decide what they need to do and what action will take from them,” LeBoeuf said. “We will wait till we get the action from the court, and it will take the measures that the court mandates.”

News 10 reached out to other residents in the Hidden Hills community. At the request of their attorneys, they declined to comment.
