    Firefighters battle train fire in Eunice

    UPDATE, 10/10/24, 4 p.m.: According to a spokesperson from St. Landry Parish government, emergency responders were alerted to two train cars on fire, with the flames spreading to the railroad bridge underneath the cars. Crews were able to quickly respond, safely removing the empty train cars from the track and extinguishing the fire.

    The bridge, which was significantly impacted by the fire, is currently being assessed for structural damage. Firefighters remain on the scene to fully control the situation.

    ORIGINAL STORY: EUNICE, La. ( KLFY ) — A train is on fire at a railroad crossing in Eunice, officials said.

    According to a post on the Eunice Police Department’s Facebook page , residents are advised to stay away from the area of North St. Mary near the tracks.

    A railroad bridge caught on fire, setting two empty cars ablaze. The train has been moved and firefighters are working to put out the fire on the bridge, officials said.

    Initial reports of a hazmat situation are unconfirmed, but a local business, Fontenot’s Diesel Enterprises, posted on its Facebook page that it was informed by police that a train was on fire near its shop with unknown hazardous materials, and that they were advised to evacuate.
