LAFAYETTE, La. ( KLFY ) — Firefighters were on the scene of a fire at the Lafayette Jockey Lot flea market early this morning, authorities said.

Long-time vendor, Kenny Bucchi, gave his thoughts on the flea market’s future.

“I really feel for any souls that got things burned down, or had this type of problem,” said Bucchi.

The Lafayette Fire Department said they received a call around 7 a.m. Thursday morning concerning the fire.

Officials said one of the large metal buildings in the complex caught fire and sustained major damage. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

Bucchi said vendors who rely on income at the market will be the most affected.

“Some people are on Social Security, and they just come out here and make a few extra dollars. So if any of that got damaged, then there’s no way they can make extra money to live off of,” Bucchi said.

Despite the damages to the complex, Bucchi said the resilience of the complex is rooted in its strong community ties and will continue to provide a diverse shopping experience for all visitors.

“It’s not enough to affect the Jockey Lot, the Jockey Lot will keep pushing on. That’s a great place for people to come and visit shop,” Bucchi said.

Power has been restored to the business and buildings that were not damaged by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
