LOUISIANA ( KLFY ) — Peter Williams ran for Congress in 2016 and was called “the irrelevant candidate” by a news outlet. Eight years later, he says his experience, work ethic, and ability to lead can earn him a seat in the 6th Congressional District.

“In high school, I played quarterback. Back in the day, I mean, I’m talking about 1975. I’m playing quarterback, so therefore I know how to call the play. I know how to lead,” Williams said.

Originally from Kaplan, Williams attended the University of Louisiana where he became the recreational director at the Martin Luther King Center.

“I’ve been a pioneer on the front end for communities, especially in Lafayette, pretty much all my life,” Williams said.

From there, he moved into the world of agriculture. He became a tree farmer and learned the importance of agriculture’s role in Louisiana’s economy.

“I’m an agriculturalist. I live in rural Louisiana around New Roads. And within that capacity, I deal with farmers. I deal with agriculture. I deal with help, deal with housing, with education, [and] transportation. So, besides the AG guy, I’m an advocate,” Williams said.

If elected, Williams wants to prioritize agriculture since it plays a major role in six parishes of the district.

“And also trying to bring unity back within the state party. Washington Politics is not going to drive me. I’m a Democrat, but I’m an independent thinker. I’m from Acadia. We think for ourselves,” he said.

With a love for all things Louisiana, Williams said his commitment and his Louisiana-first mentality will set him apart from the other candidates.

“I think I’ll bring the old school seasoned mentality to this new district because I’ve been there and done that. I’m God-fearing. I want to be distinguished as an elected official, a politician to tell you what you want to hear. And elected officials will tell you what you need to hear. I don’t have to make it sweeter than it is. I’m going to do what’s best for Louisiana. District 6 first, Louisiana. And that’s how I’m going into every issue,” he said.
